Motivated Skills? Holland Typography?

Sheila Manalo, Jill Hartmann, Tehseen Lazzouni, Michelle Viernes, Laurie Tanjuaquio, Josie Alaoen, and Ricardo Escalante try their hand at this card sort. It was another exercise for the participants to figure out how to leverage their strengths and apply skills that they are passionate about using.

Up close and personal, Mark Plummer, Brian Pierini, Scott Paulson, Jane Peterson, and Pat Tung see how the cards stack up in terms of their interests and abilities. As the managers of their own careers, knowing what they enjoy doing and how well they do what they enjoy is a key step in forging their career paths.

Likewise, others work through the deck. Conceptually, the "Motivated Skills Card Sort" could be evaluated in light of John L. Holland's Typography Theory.

Assessing Your Transferrable Skills with Claire Solario

The agenda for the session included:
* Understanding the three types of skills
* How those skills fall into four subcategories
* How these skills fit into the big picture of getting the right job for you

To get down to that nitty gritty, UExplore participants made use of the "Motivated Skills Card Sort." With a deck of cards in hand, the participants were asked to look at each skill and put them in order of how much they liked/disliked using the skill and how proficient they were with that skill.


The "Motivated Skills Card Sort" was an exercise that allowed participants to determine if those skills were "motivated skills", "survival skills", "areas for development", or "red flag areas".

In "the big picture", the right job would align with your motivated skills and with your values.

There will be a welcome by Chancellor Fox and a special keynote address from Mary Hart, former UCSD business officer with over 30 years of service.

In addition, there will be opportunities to learn about existing Work/Life programs and a resource fair showcasing career and professional development services.

The Resource Fair will run from 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
